How to choose the right rotary burr

It is useful to make the choice in two steps. First select the burr design according to the material you will machine and the required performance, then choose the specific head shape according to the type of work.

1️⃣ Choose the design according to material and workload

For aluminium, aluminium alloys, other non-ferrous metals and suitable plastics, you can choose between HSS rotary burrs and carbide rotary burrs with ALU toothing depending on the type of work.

HSS rotary burrs are the more economical option for softer materials and less demanding or less intensive work. They are suitable for shaping, deburring edges, adjusting holes or making small corrections where a high material removal rate is not required.

Carbide rotary burrs with ALU toothing are also intended for aluminium, aluminium alloys, other non-ferrous metals and suitable plastics, but use a tooth geometry adapted to soft and ductile materials. They are the better choice when you need higher performance and a higher material removal rate, especially for more intensive or professional work.

For steel, stainless steel and cast iron, choose carbide rotary burrs with cross toothing. They are suitable for general machining of these metals, for example deburring and dressing edges, welds or holes.

For demanding materials under higher loads or longer working cycles, you can choose TiAlN-coated carbide rotary burrs. The coated version is suitable where higher wear resistance and longer tool life are important.

The choice is therefore not simply HSS versus carbide. The tooth geometry and the overall burr design also matter. A carbide rotary burr with cross toothing and a carbide rotary burr with ALU toothing are intended for different material groups even though both are made from carbide.

2️⃣ Choose the head shape according to the operation

Once you have selected the right design, choose the working head shape according to where and how material needs to be removed.

For welds, corners or transitions between two surfaces, pointed or rounded tree shapes are commonly used depending on the required result.

For shaping, working in cavities or producing smooth transitions, ball-shaped burrs are suitable.

For deburring and dressing straight edges, cylindrical or cylindrical ball-nosed shapes are suitable.

For edge breaking, chamfering and work in narrower areas, cone shapes are used.

The final head shape is therefore determined mainly by the specific operation, while the burr design and toothing must match the workpiece material and required workload.

Where and how rotary burrs are used in practice

Rotary burrs are useful wherever you need to locally modify the shape, edge or surface of a material with greater control than broad-area grinding allows. Material is removed only where it is needed.

Metal fabrication and workshop work

Typical uses include:

• deburring edges after laser, saw or plasma cutting,
• breaking sharp edges before assembly or another operation,
• adjusting and enlarging holes,
• shape corrections on steel, stainless steel or aluminium parts,
• finishing areas that a grinding disc cannot reach or where it would affect too large a surface.

Practical example:
After cutting a metal profile, you need to remove burrs and dress an edge. With a correctly selected rotary burr, you can work only on the problem area without unnecessarily removing material around it.

Welding and weld finishing

Rotary burrs can be used to level excess weld material, dress the transition between a weld and the base material or locally prepare the surface for further finishing.

Practical example:
After welding a structure, only part of the weld or its transition into the surrounding material needs to be dressed. The right burr shape lets you work on that area without grinding the whole surface.

Machining aluminium and non-ferrous metals

When producing or modifying aluminium parts, rotary burrs can be used for deburring, shape corrections and dressing edges or holes. Depending on the intensity of the work, choose between an HSS burr and a higher-performance carbide burr with ALU toothing.

Workshop repairs and maintenance

Rotary burrs are also useful for routine repairs when you need to remove small irregularities, adjust the shape of a part or dress a contact area so that components fit correctly.

In all these cases, the main advantage is the ability to remove material in a controlled way only where it is actually needed.

How to work with rotary burrs

Rotary burrs are designed for high-speed operation and are used in rotary machines that support this working range – typically die grinders, micromotors or rotary tools. Their use relies on controlled guidance and gradual material removal rather than high pressure.

Guide the tool smoothly, allow the toothing to cut and remove material gradually. The correct speed depends on the burr type and diameter as well as the workpiece material.

Rotary burrs are not suitable for a standard cordless screwdriver or conventional drill if the machine cannot provide the required speed and running stability. Speeds that are too low or excessive pressure can cause vibration, poor cutting action and faster tool wear.

When working, make sure to:

• choose a burr suitable for the workpiece material,
• follow the recommended operating speed for the specific burr,
• guide the tool smoothly without excessive pressure,
• ensure correct and secure clamping,
• wear eye protection against flying chips.

Rotary burrs are not intended for broad-area grinding. Their main advantage is precise and controlled material removal in a specific area.

How is the range divided further?

The rotary burr range is divided by design, toothing and typical application. First choose the appropriate range according to the workpiece material and workload, then select the head shape for the specific task.

• HSS rotary burrs
  For aluminium, aluminium alloys, other non-ferrous metals and suitable plastics. A more economical solution for less demanding or less intensive work.
• Carbide rotary burrs
  Carbide burrs with cross toothing for general metal machining, especially steel, stainless steel and cast iron.
• Carbide rotary burrs with ALU toothing
  Tooth geometry intended for aluminium, aluminium alloys, other non-ferrous metals and suitable plastics. Suitable when you need higher performance and a higher material removal rate than HSS can provide.
• TiAlN-coated carbide rotary burrs
  Higher-performance option for more demanding machining, higher loads and longer working cycles, especially for steel, stainless steel and other difficult-to-machine materials.
• Rotary burr sets
  A combination of several shapes and sizes for workshops, maintenance and service work where different operations are regularly required.

After selecting the right range, choose the specific burr shape according to the task – for example cylindrical for straight surfaces and edges, ball-shaped for forming, tree-shaped for transitions and welds, or conical for chamfering and difficult-to-reach areas.
