The main part of the range consists of HSS annular cutters with a 30 mm cutting depth. They are designed for magnetic drills and, depending on diameter, use either a 19 mm Weldon shank or a 32 mm Weldon shank. Annular drilling is particularly useful for larger diameters because the tool does not have to remove the entire volume of material from inside the hole.
The range also includes ejector pins for annular cutters with Weldon shanks. The pin helps locate the drilling centre and ejects the solid core from the cutter after the hole is completed. In systems with internal coolant supply, it can also allow coolant to reach the cutting area. The correct ejector pin therefore needs to be selected according to the diameter range of the annular cutter being used.
What should you consider when choosing?
Start by selecting the required hole diameter. Then check the thickness of the material in relation to the 30 mm cutting depth and make sure your magnetic drill supports the required shank size.
The annular cutters in this range use two Weldon shank sizes depending on diameter:
- 19 mm Weldon for cutters up to 60 mm diameter,
- 32 mm Weldon for cutters with diameters of 65 and 70 mm.
You also need to select the corresponding ejector pin. A 6.35 × 75 mm pin is intended for cutters Ø 12–60 mm, while an 8 × 90 mm pin is available for larger diameters.
Comparison with a twist drill
An annular cutter does not remove material across the entire area of the hole. It cuts around the circumference and leaves a solid core inside. This is why annular drilling is particularly useful for larger diameters, where a conventional twist drill would have to remove substantially more material.
How to work with annular cutters for magnetic drills
The key requirements are stable attachment of the magnetic drill, an appropriate operating mode, smooth feed and suitable cooling or lubrication. The magnetic base needs suitable conditions to hold securely. Dirt, rust, a thicker layer of paint, an uneven surface or insufficient material thickness can reduce its holding force.
When drilling:
- check that the magnetic drill is securely attached,
- use a speed appropriate for the cutter diameter and the material being drilled,
- feed the cutter smoothly without applying unnecessarily high pressure,
- provide suitable cooling or lubrication according to the tool and the way it is being used,
- ensure proper chip removal and avoid unnecessary chip build-up around the cutting area.
When working vertically or overhead, the drill must be additionally secured mechanically in accordance with the requirements of the specific machine manufacturer. The magnetic base alone must not replace additional safety securing in these situations.
