WHAT ARE FORSTNER DRILL BITS?

A Forstner drill bit is a special type of drill bit designed to produce precise, clean and smooth holes in natural wood and materials such as plywood or laminated boards.

It is ideal for both professional and DIY applications wherever high-quality, accurate holes are required.

One of the main advantages of Forstner drill bits is their ability to produce holes with smooth, splinter-free edges. This is particularly important when working with hardwood, softwood, laminated boards, plywood or chipboard.

Thanks to their design with a centre point and sharp peripheral cutting edges, they produce clean and accurate holes without cracking or splitting the material.

APPLICATIONS OF FORSTNER DRILL BITS

Drilling in wood: Forstner drill bits are ideal for producing precise holes in both softwood and hardwood. They are indispensable for furniture manufacturers and joiners who require perfectly accurate holes for dowels, hinges and other fastening components.
Drilling in plywood and laminated materials: Their design minimises the risk of damaging surface layers while ensuring a clean cut through the material.

Forstner drill bits are primarily intended for drilling shallow flat-bottomed holes. Typical applications include:

Knot repair plugs: For repairing knot holes in timber using wooden plugs.

Although a Forstner drill bit is not the ideal choice for drilling completely through the material, and there are better alternatives for this purpose (such as Brad point wood drills), it can still be used for through holes under certain conditions and with the correct drilling technique.

We recommend following these guidelines:

Reduce the drilling speed – When drilling completely through the material, drill more slowly and carefully to prevent damage to both the drill bit and the workpiece.
Use a backing board – Placing another wooden board beneath the workpiece will minimise tear-out and splintering on the exit side of the hole.
