    PHILLIPS vs. POZIDRIV

    COMPLETE GUIDE TO CHOOSING THE RIGHT CROSS-HEAD SCREWDRIVER BIT

    Cross-head screwdriver bits are among the most commonly used bits for assembly, servicing, and general workshop tasks. At first glance, they may look very similar, but you'll quickly notice the difference between the right and the wrong bit: the screw may slip, the screw recess may become damaged, or the bit itself may wear out unnecessarily.

    When choosing a bit, it is not enough to simply see that the screw has a "cross" recess. It is important to identify the type of screw recess, choose the correct bit size, and consider the intended application. One bit is better suited for precision assembly, another for frequent screwdriving with a cordless screwdriver, and another for driving wood screws.

    In this guide, you'll learn how to identify the different types of cross-head screwdriver bits, recognise the most common designs, and choose a bit that fits the screw correctly. This will help you work more confidently, more accurately, and with a lower risk of damaging either the screw or the tool.

    WHY THE CROSS RECESS REPLACED THE SLOTTED SCREW HEAD

    In the first half of the twentieth century, as powered screwdrivers became increasingly common in industry, screws with a single slotted head were no longer suitable.

    Correctly positioning the screwdriver in the slot took too much time. In addition, the screwdriver frequently slipped out of the slot, resulting in damage to either the workpiece or the screw itself.


    PHILLIPS

    The solution came in the 1930s with the Phillips Screw Company, which introduced the first cross-head screw design – Phillips (also referred to as PH).

    Today, this type of screw head is mainly used on drywall screws. (They are usually black.)

    The flanks of a Phillips recess taper towards the tip. This conical shape makes it easier to insert the screwdriver into the screw head. During tightening, an axial force is generated along the screwdriver axis, causing the bit to be pushed out of the screw. This effect was originally intended as a torque-limiting feature.

    However, over time it became clear that this characteristic is actually its greatest disadvantage whenever high tightening torque is required.


    POZIDRIV

    For this reason, Pozidriv (also referred to as PZ) was developed. Its recess features parallel side walls, eliminating the axial force. In addition, the main cross recess is supplemented by a smaller secondary cross rotated by 45°, providing an even more secure fit between the screwdriver bit and the screw head.

    Today, this type of screw head is mainly used on wood screws. (They are usually gold-coloured.)

    WHY PHILLIPS AND POZIDRIV SHOULD NOT BE INTERCHANGED

    It is true that Phillips screwdrivers or screwdriver bits can be used to tighten and loosen Pozidriv screws. However, the tapered flanks of a Phillips bit do not properly engage with the parallel recesses of a Pozidriv screw. As a result, there is excessive play and the bit does not hold securely. At higher torque, the bit is forced out of the screw head, damaging both the bit and the screw.

    Using Pozidriv screwdrivers or bits on Phillips screws is even less suitable. The parallel flanks of the Pozidriv bit do not fit into the tapered Phillips recess, and there is no room for the additional secondary cross. In such situations, many users choose a bit one size smaller, but this overloads both the tool and the screw. Damaging the screw head then becomes almost unavoidable, and efficient transmission of high torque is no longer possible.

    As a general rule, always use the correct screwdriver bit for the screw concerned, both in terms of type and size. The type and size of our screwdriver bits are clearly marked on the tools, and the required bit type and size are always indicated on the screw packaging.


    HOW TO AVOID DAMAGING SCREWS OR SCREWDRIVER BITS

    • Before driving screws, check that the bit is in perfect condition.
    • The bit profile must match the screw head.
    • The bit size must correspond to the screw head size.
    • For optimum torque transfer, always keep the bit perpendicular to the screw head.

    When using a cordless screwdriver, the bit may "cam out" of the screw head once the applied torque exceeds the required value. If your screwdriver has torque adjustment, always set it only to the minimum level required for the job. If the bit repeatedly slips out of the screw head, it will wear much more quickly.
