Carbon fibre, technically known as a carbon fibre composite, is an exceptionally strong and lightweight material. It is widely used in sporting equipment, bicycles, automotive components, drones, model-making parts and a wide range of engineering applications.
Drilling carbon fibre requires particular care. The material contains carbon fibres that are highly abrasive, meaning that conventional HSS drill bits can become dull very quickly. At the same time, it is important to minimise fibre fraying and prevent damage around the hole.

Carbon fibre components are typically made from a polymer matrix reinforced with carbon fibres. These fibres provide exceptional strength while also placing much higher demands on the cutting tool.

For carbon fibre and other fibre-reinforced composites, high resistance to abrasive wear is essential. Solid carbide drill bits are the preferred choice because they retain a sharp cutting edge much longer than conventional HSS drill bits.
For general drilling of fibre-reinforced composites, we recommend solid carbide twist drill bits according to DIN 338.
These drill bits are suitable for fibre-reinforced composites, thermosetting plastics, cast iron, bronze, AlSi alloys and other abrasive materials.
Carbon fibre parts are often visible components or structurally critical elements. It is therefore important to drill accurately while avoiding unnecessary damage around the hole.

For production work or highly demanding carbon fibre applications, specialised drill bits with geometries specifically designed for composite materials may be preferable. For general applications, however, selecting a drill bit with excellent resistance to abrasive wear is the most important factor.
Drilling carbon fibre produces fine dust. We recommend working in a way that minimises inhalation and prevents dust from spreading around the workplace. Effective dust extraction, respiratory protection and thorough cleaning of the work area are strongly recommended.
When working with expensive, visible or structurally important carbon fibre components, we recommend testing the drilling process on a sample piece or on a less visible area first. Carbon fibre composites may differ in lay-up, thickness and resin system.

Carbon fibre is a lightweight yet extremely strong material, but it places high demands on drilling tools. Conventional HSS drill bits can become dull very quickly, so we recommend using a solid carbide drill bit together with a steady feed rate, rigid guidance and moderate feed pressure.
