Fibreglass, also known as GFRP (Glass Fibre Reinforced Plastic), is one of the most commonly used composite materials. It is widely used in boats, caravans, swimming pools, machine covers, tanks and a variety of engineering components. Although it may look like ordinary plastic, it behaves very differently during drilling.
Fibreglass contains glass fibres that are highly abrasive and quickly wear down conventional HSS drill bits. If the material is not properly supported or the drill bit is dull, burrs, surface chipping or poor hole quality may occur.

A dull drill bit tends to push and tear the material instead of cutting it cleanly. In fibreglass, this can lead to frayed hole edges and increased stress around the drilled area.
For drilling fibreglass, use a sharp drill bit with excellent wear resistance. Solid carbide drill bits are an excellent choice because they withstand the abrasive action of glass fibres much better.
When drilling fibreglass, avoid applying excessive pressure to the drill. Too much feed pressure may reduce hole quality, increase heat generation and raise the risk of surface damage.
The drill bit should cut smoothly. Stable guidance, appropriate spindle speed and a steady feed rate are essential.
With thin panels or visible components, the exit side of the hole may chip as the drill bit breaks through. Supporting the workpiece from underneath with a suitable backing board helps prevent this.
This simple step often results in a significantly cleaner hole.
Fibreglass components should always be securely clamped during drilling. If the workpiece moves, the hole may become inaccurate and the edges can be unnecessarily damaged.
Secure clamping is particularly important for small components, thin panels or when drilling multiple holes.
A standard HSS drill bit may produce satisfactory results for occasional drilling, but it wears much faster when used on fibreglass. If you need to drill multiple holes, the difference in tool life becomes very noticeable.
For fibreglass and other abrasive materials, we recommend solid carbide twist drill bits according to DIN 338.
These drill bits are suitable for fibreglass, fibre-reinforced composites, thermosetting plastics, cast iron, bronze, AlSi alloys and other abrasive materials.
When drilling multiple holes, regularly check whether the drill bit is still cutting cleanly. If hole quality begins to deteriorate, drilling resistance increases or the edges become more frayed, the drill bit may already be worn.
Replacing the drill bit in time or switching to a more suitable one helps prevent damage to the workpiece.
Fibreglass is not an ordinary plastic. It contains glass fibres that are far more demanding on the cutting edge of the drill bit. When choosing a drill bit, do not rely solely on the fact that the material looks like a plastic sheet.

When drilling fibreglass, the most important factors are a sharp drill bit, stable guidance, proper support of the material and a smooth feed without excessive pressure. For longer tool life and cleaner holes, using a solid carbide drill bit is highly recommended, as it withstands the abrasive action of glass fibres much better.
